Root Canals Q & A

What is a Root Canal?

A root canal, also known as endodontic therapy, is a procedure that may be recommended if your tooth pulp becomes infected or otherwise damaged. During a root canal, we will remove the damaged nerve material within your tooth and will use dental materials to preserve your natural tooth, rather than pulling it out.

What are the Signs That You May Need a Root Canal?

Contact the team at Sunrise Dental right away if you have any of these symptoms. You may need a root canal if you experience:

  • Pain or discomfort when biting down or chewing
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold
  • Dull ache inside of your tooth

What are the Steps in a Root Canal Procedure?

Sunrise Dental will numb your tooth and the surrounding area with local anesthesia so you are comfortable during the procedure. The root canal therapy includes:

  • Removing the infected or damaged pulp via your tooth’s root canal system
  • Cleaning your tooth’s canal system
  • Shaping your tooth’s canal system
  • Packing your tooth’s canals with a synthetic material, called gutta percha
  • Sealing the gutta percha in place

In some cases, you’ll get a temporary crown after your root canal. This crown, which is later replaced by a permanent custom crown, protects your tooth and prevents further damage. It can take multiple visits to complete your root canal therapy, especially if there is an active abscess from infection.

What is Recovery After Root Canal Therapy Like?

You can expect some discomfort for the first day or two. Prescription or over-the-counter pain relievers will help you feel more comfortable as you heal. Talk with Sunrise Dental if you’re in too much pain.

For the first few days after a root canal, stick with a soft diet. It’s safe to have foods like:

  • Soft fruits
  • Pudding
  • Yogurt
  • Soft cooked eggs
  • Ice cream
  • Grits

Try to chew on the opposite side of your mouth until you feel well again. The root canal won’t impact your regular brushing and flossing routine.
